2010 Scholarship Program

In order to qualify for the HCCH Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be of Hawaiian descent
  • Be a resident of Hawai’i
  • Be a full-time student in an accredited two- or four-year college as either a classified undergraduate or graduate student in or out of the State of Hawai’i
  • Have a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.5 for graduating high school seniors or undergraduate students
  • Have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 for graduate students
  • Priority is given to members of HCCH in good standing, including directly-related family members.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

In order to process your application, you will need to send the following items:
  1. Your completed 2010 HCCH Scholarship Essay.
  2. A completely and correctly filled-out HCCH 2010 Scholarship Application Form. (Or download an alternate Microsoft Word Doc version of the Application Form.)
  3. A photocopy of your Birth Certificate (included with your Application and Essay) (Note: You will not have to submit a copy of your birth certificate if you already submitted a copy of your birth certificate as part of an earlier application process with HCCH.)
  4. An official copy of your most recent transcript (within last six months of this application) must be sent to HCCH by or before June 30, 2010. A transcript submitted beyond the last six months should be submitted with an explanation (returning to school, family, etc.).
  5. A Letter of Acceptance from the institution you will be attending for a graduate program (first year only).
You will not be considered for a scholarship unless we have received both the photocopy of your Birth Certificate AND an official copy of your most recent transcript!

2010 HCCH Scholarship Essay Question

The Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act may be a reality by the time you read this essay question.
The U.S. House of Representatives, on February 24, 2010, passed H.R. 2314 – The Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act (NHGRA) after some debate on the floor. Two congressmen registered their opposition to the passing of an amendment made to NHGRA.
  • What amendment did the two congressmen oppose?
  • Who proposed that amendment?
  • Name three objections made by the two opposing congressmen?
DO NOT RESPOND TO PAST YEARS’ QUESTIONS. RESPONSES TO THE WRONG QUESTION COULD DISQUALIFY YOU FOR SCHOLARSHIP.
Essay responses should be at least two pages (type-written and double-spaced). It is recommended that you use a font such as Courier and a font size of either 10pt or 12pt.
The essay should address the question directly. You are allowed a limited amount of space in which to answer so several drafts may be required. At least three references, not all internet, should be used in support of your essay.

How much is the scholarship award?

The amount of the award is determined by the HCCH Scholarship Committee. Awards vary and are based on academic standing, financial need, the quality of the essay and the completeness of the application package. Scholarship checks are made payable to the scholarship recipient and the post-high institution and are mailed to the university or college financial aid office. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses.

Deadlines for 2010 Scholarship Applications

  • March 1 — application available on-line.

  • May 15 — postmarked deadline for receiving completed HCCH application, Essay, and Copy of Birth Certificate. (Note: You will not have to submit a copy of your birth certificate if you already submitted a copy of your birth certificate as part of an earlier application process with HCCH.) The May 15th deadline is firm. Due to minimal staffing, applications being sent by certified mail, return receipt requested, will only be accepted from May 10 through May 15, 2010. No exceptions are made.
  • June 30 : postmarked deadline for receiving applicants’ transcripts.
