Provide responses to the following three questions:

  1. How does the speaker describe the individuals who came from Sāmoa to settle Hawai’i? Why is that important for Hawaiians to remember today?
  2. Why is excellence important for the Hawaiian people? How does the speaker describe it?
  3. The speaker talks about the importance of the people and moving the canoe. Explain how the people are the key to the future of the Hawaiian people and explain what you will do to contribute to this future.

Be sure to proofread your work carefully.

You may find these suggestions helpful:

The essay should not be longer than two typed, double spaced pages using 12 pt. font.  Under these guidelines the total number of words will be about 500.  It is not necessary to repeat the question as that will use up space for your answer.  You can reference the question in the form of numbers, i.e., “The answer to #1 is…”

Your application will be reviewed to ensure all requirements have been completed, i.e. clear and concise answers/quotes or citations are encouraged, organization, clarity of thought and depth of analysis.

DO NOT RESPOND TO PAST YEARS’ QUESTIONS. RESPONSES TO THE WRONG QUESTION WILL DISQUALIFY YOU FOR SCHOLARSHIP.

How much is the scholarship award?

The amount of the award is determined by the HCCH Scholarship Committee. Awards vary and are based on academic standing, the quality of the essay and the completeness of the application package. Scholarship checks are made payable to the scholarship recipient and the post-high institution and are mailed to the university or college financial aid office. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses.

These are one year scholarships, and you must re-apply each year for continued funding. You are not guaranteed an award each year.
