How is the essay question chosen?
Ideas for the essay question are reviewed by the Scholarship Committee each year. The essay question is generally derived from a discussion of issues that are of concern to the Hawaiian community and the availability of research resources (i.e., government agencies, library materials, internet research).

What is an example of an essay question?
The essay question for the 2000 HCCH Application was:

"For the first time in U.S. Census history, "Native Hawaiian" is listed as a choice of ethnicity. To be counted as a "Native Hawaiian" in the 1990 Census, one needed to write in the choice:
    A. Why is it significant that "Native Hawaiian" is listed as a choice of ethnicity? What was the count for Native Hawaiians in 1990? In 1980?
    B. Why is it important that Native Hawaiians be accurately counted? Describe two examples of how Census numbers have affected the Native Hawaiian community? Describe how the Year 2000 Census will directly affect you."

Essay responses should be two pages (type-written and double-spaced)

How is the money sent to me if I receive a scholarship?
The award is a check made out to the recipient and the institution s/he will be attending in the Fall semester of the year the award is made. For instance, if you are attending the University of Hawaii-Manoa in the Fall of 2005 and you receive a scholarship, the check will be sent to the University of Hawaii-Manoa/(Applicant's Name).

Why didn't I receive an award for this year?
The three top reasons why an applicant does not receive an award are:

    1. Incomplete Applications: Be certain that all necessary application materials are mailed with your completed application, including an answer to the essay question, proof of Hawaiian ancestry, etc. For more information, see HCCH Scholarship.

    2. Applicant Ineligibility: Awards will only be issued to students who are of Hawaiian ancestry who are also residents of the state of Hawai'i. If you are not a resident, you are ineligible for the scholarship.
You must also have a qualifying GPA and attend a qualifying secondary school as a full-time student. If you do not have a qualifying GPA, or do not attend a qualifying secondary school full-time, you are ineligible for the scholarship.

    3. Late Applications: Be aware of the scholarship application deadline. Applications received after the deadline which are not post-marked by the deadline will be ineligible.
