SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS FOR 2005-2006
Some
messages from past recipients
- In 1997 and 1998, the Hawaiian Civic
Club of Honolulu honored me, awarding two scholarships for graduate
school expenses. At the time, this was the first community support
given for my work, a gesture that warmed my heart and motivated me
to work even harder in my studies.
As promised back in 1997, my desire
was to return hom from Washington State to serve the families of
Hawai'i. Today, I work as the Executive Director of Ke Anuenue
Area Health Education Centers, Inc., in Hilo. The assistance and
encouragement from your organization provided me with crucial financial
and emotional support. In addition, these awards also supplied
me with a vital point of contact with the community I hoped to
someday serve through my work.
While I want to thank you for
the fund, most importantly I want to thank you for your heart,
for your willingness to support one of your sons embarking on a
quest for knowledge, and hopefully, increased wisdom. From myself
and my family, mahalo to the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu for
your trust and support.

- "The HCCH scholarship has
afforded me the opportunity to pursue a higher education.
In May of 1999, I graduated from the University of Hawaii
at Manoa with a bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies with
an emphasis in Health Sciences. In August of 1999, I was
adimtted into graduate school at the University of Hawaii
at Manoa, where I am currently pursuing a master of science
degree in Biomedical Sciences with an emphasis in Genetics
and Molecular Biology. Upon the completion of my master's
degree, I intend to pursue a Ph.D in the same discipline
as well as a M.D. in Pathology. Because of the continued
support from this scholarship, my academic and career goals
are becoming a reality. It is of great importance that this
scholarship continues to be a source of financial assistance
to Hawaiians who wish to pursue a higher eduactaion because
we are the next generation of leaders for the Hawaiian community.
The one thing to remember is that KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

- With the
scholarship money I received I have used
it to fund my travels to and from Kauai and
to help partially pay for a laptop computer.
My research is on the recently released Nene
population in the Hanalei National Wildlife
Refuge. This is the first wetlands area that
these birds have been released into so I
monitor their use of this habitat from what
they eat to where they roost, mate and nest.
The Hanalei release site is in the middle
of very productive taro fields so it is important
to observe if there is any depredation on
the taro that will affect the farmers livelihood.
Currently there are approximately 360 Nene
on Kaua'i and the target number is 1,400
so there is still much work to be done with
the island wide population.
